Local authority motions

Councils across the country are passing motions showing support for Justice for All & legal aid.

Here are some examples from around the country. Why not ask your local councillors to do the same? Let us know if your local authority has pledged support for free legal advice.

Newcastle City Council - 7 December 2011

“Notes with concern the Government’s legal aid reforms, which would remove access to free legal advice for an estimated 650,000 individuals a year, at a time when they most need it;

The Council
- resolves to support the Justice for All campaign for free legal advice, which aims to ensure everyone is treated fairly under the law, and to sign up to this campaign.
- agrees to send a copy of this Motion to the Secretary of State for Justice, the Home Secretary, the Minister for Women and Equalities, the Deputy Prime Minister and all local MPs, urging them to support free legal advice.”

Shepway District Council - 23 November 2011

"To recommend that the council take the following action namely to write to the Ministry of Justice that whilst the council recognise the need to address the national budget deficit it considers that the proposed cuts in legal aid will adversely affect the most disadvantaged members of society and that consequently the proposals should be modified."

Nottingham City Council- 28 June 2011

“This Council strongly supports the rights of its Citizens to receive legal advice, irrespective of their financial circumstances... The City Council will therefore: Continue to lobby Government over the Government’s legal aid reforms; Support the Justice for All campaign; Explore the limited ways in which it can support the Nottingham Law Centre in the future; Find ways in which this city can ensure that its most vulnerable citizens have access to legal advice”

London borough of Hackney - 2 March 2011

“Believes that access to justice is a right that should be available to all and, ensuring that individuals are not excluded from the courts system due to lack of finance was deemed fundamental to ensuring the principles of equality before the law when it was created in 1949. Supports the Justice for All campaign and asks the Government to think again and talk to advice agencies in inner city areas.”
